Fred Stein: Icons of the 20th Century

Fred Stein: Icons of the 20th Century, featuring portraits by master photographer Fred Stein, is on view through May 10. This exhibition offers a rare, intimate look at faces that shaped the 20th century: Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Georgia O’Keeffe, Salvador Dalí, and Fidel Castro, to name a few. “We are honored to bring Fred Stein’s legacy to Millerton,” says Natalie Tyler, gallery director. “To see Stein’s portraits in conversation with one another is to witness the 20th century in the making. These figures transformed the arts and sciences, launched revolutions, and led nations.” Fred Stein, a pioneer of street photography and a master of the Leica, had a singular gift for
capturing the psychological depth of his subjects. Having fled Nazi Germany and later occupied France, Stein brought joy and perspective to his work—his experience as a refugee informing an intimate, humanistic style. Mad Rose Gallery, located in the heart of Millerton, is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary works that inspire the intellect and stir the spirit. Representing a roster of established and emerging artists, the gallery is a cultural hub for Dutchess County and beyond. Opening Memorial Day weekend, Constellation: A Summer Salon, curated by Kim Schmidt, brings together nearly 100 works in a layered, salon-style exhibition. Artists include Louise Bourgeois, Sandy Skoglund, Alice Aycock, Kiki Smith, Richard Estes, and Richard Diebenkorn, among many others. Mad Rose Gallery is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5 pm, at 5916 N. Elm Ave. and 3 Main St. in Millerton.
