Beyond Ritual
August 17, 2023

The Re Institute is pleased to present the work of Judith Braun and Rowan Willigan. Both artists have a history of making large mural-based pieces. Each will be showing work that continues this interest. The gallery will be closed for two weeks prior to the exhibition to allow for the completion of site-specific works. This two week closure will allow the artists to present a unique museum-level exhibition.

Braun makes collage from carbon toner photocopies of varied things: live flowers, crumpled paper, a scrub brush. Braun says about her work, “I was a bit surprised as my work became figurative, but was reminded that I began as a realistic figure painter 50 odd years ago, so I decided not to interfere. I just let these unpredictable characters emerge from the pile of carbon photocopy prints to have a life of their own.”

Willigan has been making two drawings a day since January 1, 2021. The exhibition will display roughly 1,000 of these works. Rowan says about this work, “It travels with me, it helps me process, and tells a story over time that unfolds organically with the help of my hand, into something I can’t possibly predetermine.”

Both artists arrive at freedom through discipline.
