A Swedish native, Carolina Kim and her family have made Amenia their home over the past decade. In addition to being actively involved within the community on various levels, including the Stanfordville Recreation Campaign, she and her husband are the owners of the Big Rock Market in Stanfordville; a farm market that sells local produce, meats, and delicious treats from local food purveyors. She is also the founder of Fit Pregnancy Club, a workout club dedicated to tailoring a range of exercise classes specifically for both expecting and post pregnancy mothers.
Kim can often be found walking the Wethersfield trails with her adorable mini Bernedoodle, Buddy, or exploring the beautiful countryside behind the ears of her Irish-bred horse, Shaw. The countryside is where she feels most at home, and the ‘Farmer in Heels’ catches up with Millbrook Magazine, giving us insight into her favorite things to do and places in the area.
From Carolina:
I grew up in a small village two hours west of Stockholm in Sweden. About 14 years ago, I discovered Millbrook, and have been here ever since. Millbrook and the surrounding area reminds me so much of my hometown in Sweden, I was so happy to discover this beautiful countryside. What started out as a weekend retreat for my family, became our full time residence in the summer of 2019.
Favorite place to hike:
There is no place quite like Wethersfield. On days when I’m low on time, I walk the three mile loop, and days when I’m more flexible, I bring a group of friends and hike the seven mile loop. The scenery is really from another era.
Wethersfield is also by far my favorite place to go for a long ride on my horse. The trails and jumps are perfectly groomed and safe.
Favorite place to eat:
There are so many amazing places close to home! I’m forever a fan of Michel Jean and his “new” restaurant Champetre in Pine Plains. It is so fantastic and delicious. Try the dirty martini and scallops! I also love Stissing House and Tamarack.
Favorite for home decor:
I always end up spending way too much money at my friend Darren’s place, Tent, in Amenia.
For antique and thrift shopping I always find something at The Millbrook Antiques Mall. Westerlind in Millerton also has great Scandinavian style decor and furniture.
Favorite for garden:
I’m definitely a gardener in training, but probably Paley’s and Adam’s for all my failed gardening attempts!
Favorite for fashion:
Rowena Gill of RG Couture can make all the custom dresses (and hunt coats) of your dreams come true. I also love Juniper on Franklin Ave in Millbrook for beach cover ups and Westerlind for outdoor/country chic gear.
Favorite for gifts:
For kids gifts and fun little hostess gifts, the Merritt Bookstore in Millbrook is always great. Jennifer at Juniper is always a lifesaver and has created last minute Easter baskets for my kids in the past when I’ve forgotten (sorry to advertise this Jennifer).
Favorite events in the area to attend:
The Millbrook Hunt Ball is the best party of the year in the area. Our family favorite is the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck! Our store Big Rock Market, located in Stanfordville, also puts on great events throughout the summer that are fun for everyone.
