Brewery and Wetlands Walk

Come see, taste, and hear about how the Plan Bee Farm Brewery transformed their 25-acre farm and 1830s era barn into a sustainable brewery where they organically grow most of the ingredients that go into their beer. They will be set up all day (from 12:00 to 7:00 PM) with educational wetland walks at 2:00 and 5:00 PM. Stop by the booth for SWAG and info or just to nerd out on ecosystem.

From the Dark Wood to the Luminous Garden: Dante at Wethersfield

This site-specific lecture will explore the interconnection of the statuary within the Wilderness Garden, the Formal Garden, and the Dark Wood of Life through the lens of leading academic expert Joseph Luzzi.

Joseph Luzzi (PhD, Yale) is Professor of Comparative Literature at Bard College, the author of five books including My Two Italies, a New York Times Editors’ Choice selection, and In a Dark Wood: What Dante Taught Me About Grief, Healing, and the Mysteries of Love, a Vanity Fair “Must-Read” selection that has been translated into multiple languages.

This lecture is made possible by the generous underwriting support of Underwriters, Frederick and Alexandra Peters, and the Friends of Wethersfield.

Arrive early, and see the “Little Wilderness,” currently under restoration. Professor Luzzi will then speak about the magnificent gardens of Wethersfield abound with beautiful sculptures of Greco-Roman icons like the mythic Hercules and the star-crossed lovers Orpheus and Eurydice with a quote from Virgil inscribed beneath them, while also gesturing toward the great horticultural traditions of the Italian Renaissance. Taken together, these ancient and Renaissance symbols all tell a story.

Professor Luzzi will consider how the statues and grounds of Wethersfield relate to fundamental human issues like love and death, rebirth and hope, and even crisis and grief – what Dante called the “dark wood” of life. He will examine the possible connections between the layout, symbolism, and design of the gardens and Dante’s groundbreaking poem on the state of the human soul, The Divine Comedy, which charts a journey out of the dark wood and into the light of the stelle, stars.

Pre-registration is required and tickets are limited. Cost is $40 for Wethersfield Members and $50 for General Admission.

A brief reception will follow the event at which Prosecco and Italian cheese will be available.

Little Naturalist Program with Thom Schuchaskie of Urban Kid Adventures

August 13 – August 14, The Pole Barn at Troutbeck, $55 per Member, $60 per Guest

Little Earthlings

Thom Schuchaskie joins Troutbeck for a child-friendly, all-immersive program to introduce your child(ren) to the wonders of nature. Focused on connectivity with the earth and the environment, Thom will guide the group throughout the gardens and open fields demonstrating connectivity and presence. Examples include tossing a pebble into a pond and discovering concentric circles, as well as comparing change of thought to a walk in the woods. Thom will also introduce primitive living skills such as bow drill and other friction fires, as well as miniature “shelters,” wild edibles, and the other “gifts” of mother earth.

  • Ages 5-8 years old

The Sacred Order of Survival

Thom takes many of same learning principles from ‘Little Earthings,’ and adapts them for an older child audience. The emphasis here are the four key survival skills to live in both the wilderness and the city. With open discussions and hands-on-activities, your child(ren) will discover focus, as well as connectivity with their surroundings.

Sumi-e: Japanese Brush Painting

July 30, 3:30pm, The Ballroom, Members $40, Guests $45

Under the guidance of art teacher Joanne Wasti, children and adults will learn basic sumi brush strokes and the philosophy of this expressive art form.

About Joanne Wasti

Joanne has been an art educator for the past twenty years, both in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. She’s a graduate of RISD and has advanced degrees in art history, art education and gifted education. She started her career as a museum educator and, subsequently, studio manager at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. She’s been a teaching artist in New York City and San Jose and taught classes at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto. She was a founding teacher at the Yorkville Community School in Manhattan where she taught visual art for ten years.

Her passion is teaching people of all ages to be creative. She finds this is best done by offering students a safe space to find their own voice, while at the same time teaching technique. She encourages her students to make choices and break rules and is always pleasantly surprised by what’s produced in her classes. Her love of art history means that almost every lesson is inspired by a historic precedent or influential artist—and many of those artists are young and contemporary.

She has tirelessly worked to promote access to the arts for all children, and their families, through the design of museum and classroom curriculum, as well as the planning and facilitation of community building workshops.

She is now a full-time resident of Kent, CT where she lives in a 1850s farmhouse with her husband, anxious dog and aloof cat. She is enjoying a new life surrounded by natural beauty and wildlife, and where running, hiking, skiing and biking are right outside the front door.
