Mental Health Recovery Takes Root in Poughkeepsie
By Jamie Marshall
An estimated one in 20 adults in the United States suffers from a serious mental illness—and often those afflicted end up homeless, incarcerated, or worse. Two years ago, a group of locals came together to establish a mental health recovery center in Poughkeepsie where people suffering from mental illness can find support in a nonclinical setting. The Hudson Valley Clubhouse (HVC) opened its doors in January of this year—the first of its kind in Dutchess County, and one of 340 operating worldwide under the auspices of Clubhouse International. According to executive director Blaise Sackett, “A Clubhouse is a place for members to work, make friends, and socialize.” Sackett brings a wealth of experience to the new venture,
including ten years as program director at a Clubhouse in Queens. As of press time, HVC had welcomed its first 20 members, one of whom takes the train up from New York every day. “There are plenty of emergency programs and clinical treatment programs in Poughkeepsie. But where do people go where they can focus on their strengths and what they can bring to society?” asks Sackett. “We work hard to bring out the best in people. We see the humanity in them.” For more information contact Blaise Sackett at Hudson Valley Clubhouse. 845-743-4872, [email protected]
