As Much Spectacle as Sport
Millbrook Horse Trials: Where Eventing Meets Country Fair
By Tara Kelly

For many, the Millbrook Horse Trials (MHT), held the last weekend of July at Riga Meadow at Coole Park in Millbrook, is not-to-be-missed. Known in the equestrian world as a top-flight eventing competition, it is the only Advanced Level competition in Area 1, which encompasses all of New England and New York state. Many attendees are avid riders or competitors themselves, but for others, the draw is the excitement of a world-class sport paired with the spirit of a country fair.

Mimi Babcock, one of the Millbrook Horse Trials organizers, says, “The Millbrook Horse Trials offers a wide variety of special attractions. In addition to watching exciting world-class eventing with top-level horses and riders, spectators will find a variety of delicious food trucks, the Weekend Market with so many unique items, and a children’s activities tent. There truly is something fun for all ages at MHT.”

While horse-and-rider teams compete in dressage, cross-country, and show jumping, spectators wander the grounds, taking in the behind-the-scenes action, chatting with riders and trainers between competitions, and maybe nuzzling a horse or two. Event-ers are known to be friendly and accessible.

MHT is kid- and dog-friendly (on a leash, of course). The Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo, adjacent to the show grounds, will be on hand with information about the zoo and plenty of plush stuffed animals for the kids.

The Weekend Market draws big crowds—because who doesn’t like to shop? Catherine Hartley, who coordinates the vendors, is particularly excited about the local lineup, including Westerlind from Millerton and Natasha Blodgett, who will debut a line of ready-to-wear clothing and accessories. The always-popular Madder Hatters will also be on hand, for anyone who left their chapeau at home.

For the horsey set not competing, there’s always the chance to refresh the wardrobe at DuBarry or Glamourpuss, two longtime stalwarts of the market. Friday night’s Sip & Shop kicks the weekend off in style. Ten Mile Distillery samples its whiskey, award-winning gin, and vodka in cocktails, and B.E.E. Buzzed—tucked into a converted horse trailer—pours coffee at sunrise and cocktails as the sun goes down.
