Brilliantly British
Photos by Megan Spiro
There is a particular kind of afternoon that calls for slowing down entirely, and Moreish on Beacon’s Main Street has made an art of it. The warm, intimate dining room, with its vintage mirrors, mismatched dinnerware, fresh flowers, and bentwood chairs, feels less like a restaurant than someone’s well-appointed parlor. At the center of it all is the afternoon tea, a $45 three-tiered experience that chef Michael Johnson and his wife and co-owner Shey Aponte have crafted with real reverence for the tradition. Finger sandwiches, house-made scones with clotted cream and jam, and a rotating selection of sweets arrive alongside a proper pot of British tea, the kind of spread that demands you put your phone away and simply be present. Johnson’s credentials are formidable, two decades in UK kitchens including Michelin-starred restaurants, five-star hotels, and stints at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. But what comes through most at Moreish is not the resume. It is the conviction that British food, done right, is worthy of genuine celebration. Afternoon tea is served Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 3 pm. Reservations required with at least 24 hours notice.
